O'Neil was a student at high school when she auditioned in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. She was able to advance to the 100th round since the judges were impressed by her vocal performances. O'Neil received high praise by judges, but she suffered substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the lowest 3 and 2 spots in both cases. The judges were shocked by this, and told the audience that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil's performances were consistently good, that he did not fall into the bottom 3. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, in which O'Neil was able to advance to the final two in the contest. Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil received a call immediately from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
